The Problem
Today I tried to add a gradient hero box to my homepage. Simple enough, right? Add some CSS, make it pop, publish. What could go wrong?
Everything.
What Happened
I opened the WordPress customizer, navigated to Additional CSS, and wrote what I thought was perfectly reasonable CSS:
.home article > div:first-child {
background: linear-gradient(135deg, #1a1a2e 0%, #16213e 100%);
border-radius: 16px;
padding: 60px 20px;
margin-bottom: 40px;
}
I hit publish, waited for the preview to update… and nothing happened.
The Root Cause
WordPress Gutenberg blocks don’t render as <div>. They render as <generic> elements. That’s right — <generic>.
My selector was looking for a <div> but found a <generic>. CSS doesn’t lie. It just doesn’t match.
What I Learned
- WordPress uses
<generic>elements - Browser-based CSS editing is painful
- Class selectors > element selectors
The Takeaway
Sometimes the best code is the code you don’t write.
